Perseid Meteor Shower 2010

Postby regnad » Sun Jun 27, 2010 9:58 pm

The Perseids is one of the best meteor showers to observe, producing up to 60 meteors per hour at their peak. This year's shower should peak on the night of August 12 and the morning of the 13th, but you may be able to see some meteors any time from July 23 - August 22. The radiant point for this shower will be in the constellation Perseus. The thin, crescent moon will be out of the way early, setting the stage for a potentially spectacular show. For best viewing, look to the northeast after midnight.

In year's past, several of us have gotten together on the shores of Honker Lake in LBL to watch the meteor shower. August 12th falls on a Thursday night this year, which might make it difficult for those that have to schedule events around work. With that said, is anyone interested in getting together to watch the show this year?

Sounds like a plan to me, I have it penciled in and will do my best to keep the 13th open so we can stay out there as late as we want to. August Friday the 13th will be the 11th anniversary of the day that I proposed to Brenda. I think I saw shooting stars or fireworks when she said yes, so this will bring back some fond memories.

Joe, That was so mushy I think the reply button squished when I clicked it. LOL I just hope Brenda looks at it and then at you and gives you that look that says, "AWWWWW. . . .nice try." LOL

We're right at a week away from the spectacular show. Who all is planning to go?

I'd like to go, thinking it over. Not looking good though, as I'll need to sleep sometime, and I'd be arriving at the end of a 12 hour day then trying to stay up all night, and of course the next day if I'm in LBL I'll want to run around and cache or whatever since I've already made the drive, hence where the sleep deprivation starts to take hold.

I don't know, guess I'll see what ideas I come up with.

I'm making arrangements to camp at Energy but they are not final yet. Does anyone want to do something Friday? If my plans come through I'll be there and if anyone wants to go caching or run around the area let me know. I may also be there the rest of the weekend, but I'm not positive yet.

I tried to leave Friday open but had to schedule supervision at 11:00 that day. I have no idea if I am going to work after that or not - it depends on how much work I get done each of the other days this week : )
I am interested in the story telling at the Homeplace on Saturday. I was going to check with nieces and nephews to see if anyone was interested in going but I have not work out any plans yet. Brenda will be taking a client to a wedding that day and staying with her until the family is free so she is busy from 11:00 to about 8:00. Sunday I think we are going back to LBL to maybe partake in the free admissions to the Nature station, elk and bison prairie and Home place.
Plans are not set in stone yet but some caching will be thrown in the plans a well, I will keep you informed when I know more.

I have a site at Energy and will be there for the weekend. It was time for a camping trip anyway so I just started it a little early for this.

I was really hoping to go to this, but some people have to work. It's just too early in the school year for me to take off and I don't really see me driving there after work, staying late and driving to work on Friday. I'm dedicated but that's even a stretch for me. You guys have a wonderful time. :-)

Nice article about the Perseid Meteor Shower.

The month of August is revered by many scientists as “Meteor Month” or even “Meteor Season.”

In addition, one of the most spectacular meteor showers we will be able to see during this month is coming up after 12am tonight/tomorrow (August 11/12th)

It is called the Perseid Meteor Shower and it is surprisingly regular in its timing. What’s more is that the shower may be visible for weeks in the late summer sky depending on weather and location.

The Perseid Meteor Shower is named after the constellation Perseus, which is located in roughly the same point of the night sky where the Perseid Meteor Shower appears to originate from. Though useful, the name is actually quite a misnomer.

In actuality, the Perseid Meteor Shower is made up of debris from the comet, “Swift-Tuttle.” Every year, the earth passes through the debris cloud left by the comet, and it is at this specific time that the earth's atmosphere is bombarded by what is popularly known as "falling stars." Throughout Europe, the US, and the rest of North America, meteor shower activity usually peaks sometime around August 12th, when it is not unusual to see at least 60 meteors per hour streaking across the Northeast sky.

Though each of the meteors we see rocketing across the night sky may seem monumental, most are actually only tiny objects, usually no bigger than a grain of sand. However, these space specs travel at speeds of 71 kilometers per second, which is actually what makes the minute particles put on such a brilliant show year after year.

The best place to observe the Perseid Meteor Shower, which will be occurring after midnight tongiht and tomorrow, is somewhere dark, away from light pollution, and with the moon out of the field of vision. The less light visible, the more brilliant the meteor shower will be.

As an added bonus...

At sundown, Venus, Saturn, Mars, and the crescent Moon pop out of the western twilight in tight conjunction. All four heavenly objects will fit within a circle about 10 degrees in diameter. The planets will hang together in the western sky until 10 pm or so.

Additionally, 2010 is a good year for the Perseids because the Moon won't be up during the midnight-to-dawn hours of greatest activity. The best time to look is during the darkest hours before dawn on Friday morning, Aug 13th, when most observers will see dozens of Perseids per hour.

A good dark sky will even improve the planetary alignment, allowing faint Mars and Saturn to make their full contribution to the display.

I sat outside for a bit tonight and saw several streaking across the sky. I can't wait to get out to LBL away from the neighbor's lights to enjoy the show!
